“…they have lost the instinct of modesty.”

This is from a quote by Pope Pius XII over 50 years ago and still rings true today.

There is a great article on Christian Modesty by Robert T. Hart over at the Douay-Rheims Bible Online site that address how one should dress.
Those Who Serve God Should Not Follow The Fashions”
is something that both young and old need to be reminded about.  You can read the article online or download it from the site.

One of the quotes in the article is from Blessed Jacinta Marto.  Having heard the words of Our Lady of Fatima, Jacinta stated:

“…the sins that bring most souls to Hell are the sins of the flesh.  Certain fashions are going to be introduced which will offend Our Lord very much.  Those who serve God should not follow these fashions.  The Church has no fashions; Our Lord is always the same.  The sins of the world are too great.  If only people knew what eternity is they would do everything to change their lives.  People lose their souls because they do not think about the death of Our Lord and do not do penance.”

I couldn’t have put it any better myself.  Now before I head off to see what my kids have picked out to wear to school tomorrow,  I leave with these words from the bible…..

“A woman shall not be clothed with man’s apparel, neither shall a man use woman’s apparel:
for he that doeth these things is abominable before God.”

God Bless you!

looking for a better lunch…

Tired of the same old thing for lunch?  The same restaurants, the same food, the same conversation?

Maybe it is time to try something else for your lunch break!  No, not going to the Gym.  Even better than that.

How about going to Mass?  I have been twice in the last couple of weeks and it has definitely been a lot better than another burger or piece of pizza.  It makes the afternoon meetings easier to tolerate.  (I have to confess that I did grab a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut on my way back to the office today)

I plan to skip lunch and go to Mass at least once of week and challenge each of you to do the same.

Up for the challenge?

Man of Mystery (at least in Oklahoma)

Catholic Ragemonkey has a funny story about a recent trip to Target.

Heroes in the Home

I listened to this CD on the way home from work today.  Curtis Martin, President of Catholics United for the Faith, shares with us the importance of being a godly role model to our kids.  Filled with funny stories and practical advice, this will be a major hit for yourself or the Dad in your life.

On this CD, you will here about the unique powers that God gives to fathers and how to implement them in your family!

Just for fun…

Who is googling Catholic?

Next time your kids say that they have nothing to do….

All kids say it at one time or another.  Sometimes it seems like all the time.

Just suggest that they say a rosary.  It doesn’t take long and the good that they will receive surely outways the effort that they have to exert.  If you child doesn’t have rosary handy, they can always say the prayers with the beads.

Here is something that I copied from the Knights of Columbus website that may be helpful.

How to Pray the Rosary

  1. Make a Sign of the Cross and say the “Apostles Creed.”
  2. Say the “Our Father.”
  3. Say three “Hail Marys.”
  4. Say the “Glory Be.”
  5. Announce the first Mystery; then say the “Our Father.”
  6. Say ten “Hail Marys,” while meditating on the Mystery.
  7. Say the “Glory Be,” then say the “Fatima Prayer.”
  8. Announce the Second Mystery; then say the “Our Father.”

Repeat 6 and 7 and continue with Third, Fourth and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.

  9. Say the “Hail Holy Queen.”

Prayers of the Rosary

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; and
in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day
He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at
the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to
judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the Holy
Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the forgiveness of sins; the
resurrection of the body; and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who
trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among
women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary. Mother
of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it
was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell and
lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope!
To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you do we send up
our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn then,
most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this,
our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O
clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

V: Pray for us, Holy Mother of God.

R: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let
us pray. O God, whose only-begotten Son, by his Life, Death and
Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant,
we beseech you, that we who meditate on these mysteries of the most
holy Rosary of the blessed Virgin Mary, may both imitate what they
contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Precious Memories

Here is a good album from Alan Jackson that has been out for a while. It is traditional gospel songs that he sang as he was growing up. Although not all of the songs are ones that we are familiar with from a Catholic Mass, there are many that you will recognize.

Precious Memories

Church Camp

My kids went to Prairie Star Ranch this summer. Prairie Star Ranch is owned and ran by the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas. The youth ministry for the archdiocese has been very active the last several years and is having a big impact on the youth in our parishes.

My Jr. High daughters have been there before but this was the first time for my son. He will be a senior this year. They all had a great time. I was especially excited about my son. He had never wanted to go before. Not that he wanted to go this time, but his mother and I signed him up anyway. We thought that it would be good for him to go away to camp his last summer at home. I guess one of my last attempts to steer him the right direction. :)

My son had a great time. It is nice to see him take an interest in his faith. The young men who are counselors at the camp do a great job of showing the kids that it is cool to be Catholic; that you can be excited about your faith and still love sports and all the other “normal” high school things.

Don’t get me wrong. The girls had a great time too. It is just that they are younger and seem to have embraced their faith a little more. At least for the time being..

If you have to opportunity to send your kids to a Catholic church camp, do it. It was a great opportunity for my kids and I am sure that it will be for yours.

Dpending on your circumstances, it may be out of reach financially. The camp for my kids was $250 – $350 per session. I make a decent salary but with 7 kids, there is not a lot left over after necessities. Most camps have scholarships that are available. We had never asked before. I always thought that there were others that needed it more. We applied this year and were awarded scholarships to help pay for each of the kids. So, the moral of the story is to take advantage of these diocesean programs even if you have to get a little help. It is worth it. Have extra $? Consider contributing to a fund to help send others to camp.

The Gospel Rosary of Pope John Paul II

I just recently started listening to this CD. I think it is great. The set contains 4 CD’s – one for each mystery. There are two versions on each CD. One has dramatic readings from the Gospels while a shorter version has brief readings. The dramatic scripture readings and powerful background music transport you into the Gospel events of each mystery.

These CDs are recorded and distributed by Vinny Flynn and Still Waters. They are available on the website or at many Catholic Retailers.

Angel in the Waters

Here is a good picture book by Regina Doman that I am sure that you will enjoy. It is a wonderful story about the beginning of life that would make a great gift for new or expecting parents.
