Amazing Grace

From the media company that brought us “Chronicles of Narnia”, “Amazing Grace” opened in theaters across the country last week. Archbishop Charles Chaput from the Archdiocese of Denver has a column recommending the film as an ideal source of personal reflection as we begin our own journey of Lent.

You can check out the full column at the Denver Catholic Register .

I Wanna Be Debated

“I Wanna Be Debated” is Nick Alexander’s latest release.  It is another parody album featuring Catholic versions of popular songs such as the J. Geils Band’s “Centerfold” and the Police’s “King of Pain”.

I recently had the opportunity to listen to the CD.  As I have not heard the previous CDs, this was my first chance to hear Nick in action.

I enjoyed the CD.  It takes familiar, recognizable songs and uses them to present nuggets of the Catholic faith.  This exposes the listener to the faith and does it in a very memorable way.  I would expect that this CD will lead to further discussions on the faith.

This CD will make a great gift for someone with a sense of humor and an appreciation of their Catholic faith.  I intend to share it with my kids.

An Easter Carol

Veggie Tales - An Easter Carol

Here is another excellent video from the Veggie Tales folks.  The message is direct about the Christian meaning of Easter and will be a welcome addition to your video libray.  The songs and characters are unique as always and so much fun!

Holy Baby!

I recently watched this movie with my 3 year old daughter and wanted to share it with you as I think it is a great way to begin to share the Rosary with our children.

“Seven Prayers in Seven Languages” gives parents an opportunity to share with their children, the seven basic prayers of the rosary. And does so in seven different languages!

Holy Baby! Seven Prayers In Seven LanguagesThe animated characters helped to capture my daughter’s attention while listening to the music and song kept her entertained through out the 30 minute video. You can select the language to listen of the prayers or listen to all 7 languages at once.

It is $19.95 at most Catholic media stores.

channel 159

The Catholic Channel is on Sirius satellite radio at channel 159 for your listening pleasure.  I don’t subscribe to Sirius but wanted to pass it on to those of you who do, especially those not in range of a good Catholic Radio station.

The Catholic Channel focuses on Catholicism in the 21st Century, especially as it is lived in today’s world.  It has programming by some nationally known, award winning commentators such as, Gus Lloyd, Susan and Dave Konig, and Bob Dunning.

Champions of Faith is a groundbreaking sports special that will showcase the intersection of sports and faith in Major League Baseball by profiling many of the most accomplished and devout figures in the game both on and off the field.

The film will be available this spring and you can find information on pre-ordering at www.Championsoffaith.com.

It will feature inspiring stories, thrilling game highlights and deeply personal interviews with baseball heroes from around the majors on how their careers have been strengthened and magnified by their faith in God. You can read more about the stars of the film here.

For those of you in the Chicago area, you are invited to attend the First Annual Champions of Faith Awards Reception and Benefit Sunday, February 11th at Soldier Field.

Miracle Man

I just finished watching this film and thought that I would share my observations. This is an excellent film that runs over 3 1/2 hours. I watched it in Italian with the English subtitles.

Padre Pio

Padre Pio bore the wounds of Christ visibly on his body and spend his life performing miracles and healing the suffering. The film depicts Padre Pio’s life from a small child until his death, showing both his humility and common sense as well as the persecution which he suffered from Satanic attacks and the misguided Church officials who mistrusted him.

The thing that struck me the most was the persecution within the Church. As faithful Catholics, we are often faced with change and difference of opinion within the Church. Too often we judge others as out of step, superstitious or resisting change when we should step back and make sure we really understand what is going on. We look to our Church leaders for guidance but they are often just as unsure like Padre Pio’s Inquisitor in the movie.

Check out this movie if you want to see a great example of a Catholic Saint and the trials that he endured as a result of his Faith. This would make a good movie to see with your older children or with you study group. As an added bonus, the movie comes with a 16 booklet with Study Guide.

Men of the Beatitudes

Here a website for all you men out there seeking to live a spirituality of honor that combines elements from medieval chivalry and contemporary Christian personalism.

Men of the Beatitudes commit themselves to do three things:

1)entrust themselves completely (body, mind, and spirit) to the Holy Trinity as Merciful Love, abiding in the Heart of Jesus and following a five-part code of life;

(2) they assume responsibility for personal growth and formation; and

(3) they join with other men in the Living Rosary and other means of earthly communion.
