Bella

I finally made it to see Bella this afternoon and thought that it was a great movie.  I had read all the press and hype; plus received feedback from my wife who had a chance to attend an advance screening and was not sure what to expect.  I was pleasantly surprised.  It was a very touching movie which emphasized the virtues of faith and family.  The pro-life message was not as explicit as what I was expecting but was still very clear to the viewer by the end of the movie.

The pro-life message is not only seen in the issue surrounding Nina’s pregnancy but also in way the two main characters give of them self and help the other to accept and deal with their private struggles.  This is illustrated in the description of the New York City street that Nina provides to the blind man of people and cars rushing by with somewhere to get to.  It is easy to rush by and not notice those around us who may need a helping hand now and again.

It is easy to say, “Don’t have an abortion”, “Get a job!” or “Quit making bad decisions.”  For others it may be easy to write a check to the United Way and think that we are making a difference.  But how many of us take the time to actually try to understand why others are in the place they are and to say, “Hey, I will be there for you”?
